Liquid Helium Cryostage

The Liquid Helium Cryostage allows for cooling samples to near liquid helium temperatures (10 K) during cathodoluminescence and other spectroscopic measurements.

Cooling samples to near liquid helium temperatures offers key benefits for cathodoluminescence and spectroscopic analysis:

  1. Improved Spectral Resolution: Lower temperatures reduce thermal vibrations, sharpening emission lines and allowing more precise identification of electronic states.
  2. Reduced Thermal Quenching: Cooling minimizes non-radiative recombination, enhancing visibility of weak emissions.
  3. Greater Sensitivity to Defects: Cryogenic temperatures reveal emissions from defects and impurities, offering deeper insights into material quality.
  4. Quantum Effects Analysis: Low temperatures highlight quantum effects, essential for studying excitonic recombination and quantum confinement in advanced materials.
  5. Enhanced Stability for Time-Resolved Measurements: Cooling reduces thermal drift, improving the accuracy and reproducibility of measurements.

Typically, the temperature is regulated down to 10 K to reduce helium consumption, though it can be adjusted to any intermediate value up to room temperature. For temperatures above 77 K, liquid nitrogen can be used as an alternative to liquid helium. The option is provided with a temperature controller to monitor and control temperatures with 0.1 K resolution.
