UTD and Attolight Launch New Demo Lab to Advance Wide Bandgap Semiconductor R&D

The University of Texas at Dallas and Attolight, a pioneer in quantitative cathodoluminescence (CL), are proud to announce the opening of a new demonstration laboratory at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). The state-of-the-art equipment is designed to support the rapidly growing wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor industry by offering advanced material characterization services and collaborative research opportunities.

The demo lab further supports UTD’s strategic emphasis on semiconductor manufacturing and ecosystem development in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. It also complements Prof. Matthew Wong’s research group, which focuses on wide bandgap semiconductor materials, GaN-based optoelectronic and electronic devices, microLEDs, laser diodes, device fabrication, and advanced characterization. With Texas serving as a major semiconductor hub for manufacturing, R&D, and supply-chain activity, the lab will help connect advanced university research with the needs of the regional semiconductor industry while preparing students for careers in the U.S. semiconductor workforce.

The UTD demo lab hosts Attolight’s flagship Allalin CL-SEM platform, which has been meticulously optimized for WBG materials such as Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC). The platform integrates a high-resolution scanning electron microscope with a proprietary, high-efficiency light collection and analysis system. This allows researchers to detect structural defects and analyze spectral properties at the nanoscale without damaging the samples.

In addition to serving as a product showcase, the lab is fully equipped to provide immediate R&D contract work for industry partners and academic institutions seeking to accelerate their development cycles and improve device yields.
